Route Description
The Elves’ Trail in Obervintl, located in the Gitschberg Jochtal region, is a varied and entertaining family hike that combines nature, play, and learning. Accompanied by little elf Lili, children can discover a variety of interactive stations while learning fascinating facts about the forest, its plants, and its wildlife. The highlight of the hike is undoubtedly the spectacular Obervintl Waterfall, which provides a refreshing escape on warm summer days.
Starting in Obervintl
The hike begins at the large parking area next to the church in Obervintl. From here, signs marked “Elfenweg” (Elves’ Trail) guide visitors along the route. A small metal elf also helps point the way.
The trail initially follows a paved road for a few minutes before entering the cool, shaded forest. Right at the forest entrance, children can enjoy the first activity station, where they match animal tracks to the forest animals that left them behind. From here, you can either take a short detour to the deer enclosure or continue directly along the Elves’ Trail.
Fun and Adventure in the Forest
After just a few minutes, you’ll reach the barefoot trail, where kids can experience different natural materials under their feet. The next stop is the bee hotel, where young explorers learn interesting facts about wild bees and the famous bee dance.
Another highlight awaits at the forest bird station: the unique “Goggile-Bohn”, which roughly translates as the “Egg Track”. This unusual wooden marble run has been carved directly into large tree trunks and is great fun for children.
Our kids especially loved watching the wooden ball roll through a pig’s mouth and emerge from the other end. Wooden balls can be purchased from the vending machine on site for €2.
Reaching the Obervintl Waterfall
From here, the trail becomes slightly steeper and more uneven, with exposed tree roots in some sections. As a result, this part of the route is unfortunately not suitable for strollers. After a short climb, you’ll arrive at the impressive Obervintl Waterfall. Picnic tables and a large wooden lounger invite visitors to take a break, relax, and enjoy the sound of the cascading water.
This spot is particularly beautiful in summer. Children can play along the stream, collect stones, build small dams, or cool their feet in the refreshing water. If you plan to stay for a while, it’s a good idea to pack a change of clothes.
Forest Rest Area and Viewpoint
Continue uphill and you’ll reach a charming forest rest area featuring small huts built from branches and natural materials. It’s the perfect place for a short break surrounded by nature. Just a few steps away, a viewing platform offers beautiful views over Obervintl and the surrounding landscape. The short detour is definitely worth it.
Enjoying Nature on the Way Back
Back on the main trail, the route continues towards the hydroelectric power station. Shortly afterwards, you’ll reach the “Dry Stone Wall Habitat” information station, where visitors can learn about this valuable ecosystem.
The trail then leads back below the waterfall and reconnects with the path you already know. From there, simply follow the same route back to Obervintl.
A Perfect Family Hike in the Isarco Valley
The Elves’ Trail in Obervintl is an excellent choice for families looking to combine outdoor adventure, hiking, and nature. The interactive stations keep even younger children engaged throughout the hike, while the waterfall and shaded forest sections provide welcome relief on warm days.
