Route Description

The Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp is one of the most beautiful family hiking areas in South Tyrol. Whether you are looking for a short walk with young kids or a longer alpine hike, you will find endless meadows, cozy mountain huts and plenty of classic Alpine “Heidi” feeling here.

Hiking with Kids on the Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp

Families especially love this area because the trails are perfect for strollers. Wide and mostly flat paths lead through forests and open alpine landscapes, making it an ideal destination for hiking with toddlers and young kids.

The best starting point is the paid Zumis parking area above Rodeneck (Rodengo). From there, simply follow trail marker no. 4 along the so-called “Confingweg”.

Easy Stroller Walk to Oberhauserhütte

If you are hiking with small children and a regular everyday stroller, the short walk to Oberhauserhütte is perfect. The trail takes only around 15 minutes and leads across beautiful flower-filled alpine meadows straight to the hut.

Families love the playground with wooden play equipment located right next to the hut. This short and easy walk is ideal for a relaxed morning or afternoon in the mountains, especially with younger children who are not yet ready for longer hikes.

The Oberhauserhütte is open in both summer and winter, although opening times may vary depending on the season.

Longer Family Hikes on the Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp

If you feel like extending your walk, continue on trail no. 4 towards Naturhotel Runa. At the fork, stay left, as the right-hand path is reserved for vehicles only. The so-called “Creation Trail” climbs gently through the forest and includes some roots and rocky sections, so an all-terrain stroller is recommended here.

After around 20 minutes, the landscape opens up again and the trail becomes much easier for strollers. After about 45 minutes in total, you reach Naturhotel Runa, which also has a playground and restaurant.

Continue to Rastnerhütte or Starkenfeldhütte

If your kids still have energy left, you can continue further across the alpine pastures towards Rastnerhütte or Starkenfeldhütte.

  • Hiking time to Rastnerhütte: approx. 1 hour 30 minutes each way
  • Hiking time to Starkenfeldhütte: approx. 1 hour 40 minutes each way

Along the way, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the South Tyrolean mountains and endless alpine meadows.

Visiting the Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp in Winter

The Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp is also a magical winter destination for families. Snow-covered forests, sunny alpine pastures and cozy huts create the perfect setting for an easy winter walk with kids in South Tyrol.
