Route Description
The Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp is one of the best places in South Tyrol for a family hike. Wide alpine meadows, stunning mountain views and traditional mountain huts create the perfect setting for a day outdoors. Whether you’re planning a short walk or a longer hike, there are plenty of family-friendly trails to choose from.
Hiking with kids on the Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp
The Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp is ideal for families with young children. Many of the trails are wide, gently graded and easy to walk, making them suitable for little hikers and, in many places, for strollers as well. Along the way you’ll find several mountain huts that are perfect for a relaxing break or a traditional South Tyrolean meal.
Hike to Naturhotel Runa (formerly Roner Hut)
The most popular starting point is the paid Zumis car park in Rodeneck. From here, follow trail no. 4, also known as the “Confingweg”, towards Naturhotel Runa. At the first junction, keep left, as the road on the right is reserved for vehicles.
The hike begins along the Creation Trail, which gently winds through the forest. The first section has a slight incline and includes a few roots and rocky patches, so an all-terrain stroller is recommended. After about 20 minutes, the landscape opens up and the trail becomes much wider and easier to walk as you reach the beautiful alpine meadows.
After approximately 50 minutes, you’ll arrive at Naturhotel Runa. Here you can enjoy a meal or a drink on the terrace while the children have fun at the playground.
Continue to Rastner Hut or Starkenfeld Hut
If you’d like to extend your hike, you can continue across the Rodenecker-Lüsner Alp to two popular mountain huts.
- Rastner Hut: around 1 hour 30 minutes (one way)
- Starkenfeld Hut: around 1 hour 40 minutes (one way)
The route takes you through picturesque alpine meadows with spectacular views of the South Tyrolean mountains and plenty of scenic places to stop along the way.
Short family walk to Oberhauserhütte
If you’re looking for a shorter walk or you’re using a standard stroller, Oberhauserhütte is an excellent alternative. The easy trail and the playground at the hut make it a great option for families with younger children.
