WoodyWalk on Mount Plose – Family Adventure Trail near Brixen

The WoodyWalk on Mount Plose near Brixen is one of our favourite family adventure trails in South Tyrol. While you enjoy an easy hike and beautiful views of the Dolomites, the kids practically walk by themselves. Along the way, there are plenty of play and adventure stations for climbing, balancing, splashing around and exploring. It’s a lovely family hike on Mount Plose with plenty to keep the kids entertained.

Take the Plose gondola lift to the start

Your adventure starts at the valley station of the Plose gondola lift near Brixen. The gondola takes you up to the mountain station, where the WoodyWalk begins. From here, simply follow the signs for the WoodyWalk and trail no. 17.

The family hiking trail is also suitable for strollers. Allow around two hours of actual walking time – although with kids and all those play stations along the way, you’ll probably want to spend quite a bit longer here.

Climb, slide and balance

The WoodyWalk definitely lives up to its name: most of the play and adventure stations are made from wood and blend beautifully into the mountain scenery.
The fun starts right at the mountain station, where you can walk through the giant Plose sign. In summer, there’s even a bike inside the huge “O” where you can hop on and pedal away. Just a little further along, the fast Ploseblitz slide is waiting for the kids.

At Bell Lake, you can discover the different sounds of animal bells. Then it’s on to the long wooden Anaconda and a fun balance course. And this one isn’t just for the kids – we ended up climbing and balancing our way through it too, trying our best not to touch the ground.

Along the way, you’ll also meet the oxen Oxi and Oxana, try out the WoodyPhone, spin around on the Peitler Throne with the Dolomites in view and test your skills on several marble runs.

Water fun with Dolomite views

Things get even more fun when you reach the water stations. Cool your feet at the Kneipp area, play with the water wheel and finally set sail on the Acqua Liner.
You pull the large wooden raft across the little pond yourself – and while the kids cruise across the water, you can enjoy the Dolomites in the background. Packing a change of clothes for the kids is definitely a good idea!

Lunch at the Rossalm

By now, it’s the perfect time for a break at the Rossalm. This beautifully located mountain hut has a playground, sun loungers and fantastic views. And we really loved the food here too.

After your break, follow forest trail no. 14 gently uphill and make your way back towards the mountain station. If you still have room for a coffee, cake or ice cream, stop at La Finestra right by the mountain station.

Ride a Mountaincart back down

For adventurous families, there’s a much more exciting alternative to taking the gondola back down: Mountaincarts! Instead of floating gently back to the valley, you can race down the mountain on three wheels for a whopping 9 kilometres from the mountain station to the valley station.

Children from 3 years old can ride with an adult. From age 12 or a minimum height of 150 cm, they can ride a Mountaincart on their own. To ride a Mountaincart back down to the valley, you need to buy your ticket and reserve a time slot in advance at the Infoshop at the mountain station.

Keep in mind that the Mountaincarts don’t operate every day and may close in bad weather. Check the current opening hours and operating days before your visit.

Mount Plose with kids in winter

Mount Plose is also a great destination for families in winter. The landscape turns into a snowy wonderland with beautiful views of the Dolomites, and there are winter hiking trails as well as plenty of tobogganing fun. Find information here.
