Your adventure begins at the free car park in Aberstückl. The drive includes a few narrow hairpin bends, but it’s straightforward and well worth it. Once you arrive, simply follow the signs for the Trail of Legends (“Sagenweg”, Trail No. 13). The route is clearly marked from start to finish.

The first few hundred metres follow a quiet paved road before the trail continues into the forest. At the entrance to the theme trail you’ll find a box with the puzzle leaflets. Alternatively, you can simply download the flyer here in advance (in German). Pencils are available at the starting point, but it’s always a good idea to bring your own pen or pencil, just in case.

After just a few minutes, the path climbs gently through the woods. You’ll cross a small stream before reaching the first station, where you’ll meet the famous Nörggelen. These mischievous little characters accompany you throughout the entire walk.

Interactive stations inspired by Sarntal legends

One of the highlights of the Trail of Legends is its nine interactive stations, lovingly designed by children from the local primary school. Each stop introduces a traditional legend from the Sarntal Valley and includes a fun puzzle or activity to complete in your leaflet.

Good to know: Some of the stations have changed slightly over the years, so the leaflet doesn’t always match every detail perfectly. With a little help from parents, however, the puzzles are still easy and fun to solve.

Hike to Durr Alm

Simply follow Trail No. 13 (“Sagenweg”) all the way to Durr Alm. The route is varied and enjoyable, leading across a small bridge, through peaceful woodland and, for the final stretch, along a forest road to the mountain hut.

Durr Alm is the perfect place for a well-earned break. Families can enjoy a small playground, a climbing wall and delicious traditional South Tyrolean dishes while soaking up the peaceful mountain setting. Be sure to check the opening hours before your visit.

You’ll return along the same route.

Please note: The trail is not suitable for strollers.

Worth a stop: Lake Durnholz

If you have a little extra time on your way back, don’t miss a visit to Lake Durnholz. Surrounded by impressive mountain scenery and overlooked by its charming little church, this beautiful alpine lake looks like something straight off a postcard. The circular walk around Lake Durnholz (about 1 hour) is suitable for strollers.

Kids will especially enjoy visiting the lake after completing the trail, as Lake Durnholz also features in the legend of the Pfeifer Huisele, one of the stories told along the Trail of Legends. After hearing the tale, our kids were determined to see the lake for themselves—and the short detour was absolutely worth it.
