Route Description
The Maia Waalweg Path near Merano is one of the most scenic and popular hikes in South Tyrol – and ideal for families looking to enjoy an easy walk with kids.
The original route actually starts in Saltusio in the Passeier Valley and follows the irrigation channel for about 8 km down to Maia Alta (Obermais). Out and back, that makes roughly 16 km – often too long for kids. That’s why this shorter version is a great alternative: it’s more family-friendly and includes the most beautiful section of the trail, with orchards and fantastic panoramic views.
Starting in Rifiano: Access to the Maia Waalweg Path
The hike begins at the sports field in Rifiano. From there, follow the sign “Maiser Waalweg” (trail no. 1). Cross the Passer River via a bridge, then walk uphill through the forest for about 10 minutes – this section is a bit steep.
At the top, you’ll reach the Maia Waalweg Path. From here, continue gently downhill towards Merano, always following the water channel. The trail initially winds through shaded woodland, passing rocky sections. In places, the path becomes narrow and uneven – which makes it interesting, but also not suitable for strollers.
Panoramic Highlights: Orchards, Vineyards & Views of Schenna
After the forest, the landscape opens up into classic South Tyrolean scenery with apple orchards and vineyards.
You’ll enjoy sweeping views over the Merano basin and the surrounding mountain peaks. Towards the end of the hike, you’ll also get a beautiful view up to Schenna.
After around one hour of walking, you’ll reach Penta Castle in Maia Alta (Obermais). The return route follows the same path back.
Food & Breaks: What to Know
There is only one refreshment stop directly along the trail: the rustic “Rast am Waal“, serving small cold dishes.
That said, it’s still a good idea to bring your own snacks and drinks. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of great spots to take a break – whether on a wooden bench or enjoying a picnic in the meadow. Please respect that many of these areas are privately owned farmland.
If you like, you can also continue into the old town of Merano from Maia Alta, where you’ll find plenty of cafés and restaurants.
Tips for Families
Bring a change of clothes for kids (the water channel is hard to resist)
- Not suitable for strollers
- Pack enough water and snacks
- Don’t forget sun protection
- In winter, the water channel is usually dry
