Route Description
Turquoise waters, white beaches, rugged mountain peaks and forests glowing orange in autumn: Lake Tovel (Lago di Tovel), located in the Adamello Brenta Nature Park in Trentino, is a true natural gem! This beautiful alpine lake is just around 1 hour and 20 minutes by car from Bolzano.
Hiking Around Lake Tovel with Kids
The circular hike around Lake Tovel is easy and suitable for families with children. The trail follows the shoreline, offering beautiful views of the turquoise water and surrounding mountains along the way. There are just a few sections with steps and rocky paths where you’ll need to watch your footing, but these stretches are well secured.
One of the best things about this hike for families? You’ll come across several small white beaches along the way. They’re perfect for kids to play by the water, collect stones and splash around while you soak up the beautiful scenery. They’re also lovely spots for a little picnic break.
Can You Walk Around Lake Tovel with a Stroller?
Only about half of the trail around Lake Tovel is suitable for strollers. From the parking area, turn right and follow the path along the lakeshore. After making your way around the far end of the lake, you’ll pass a few more beautiful beaches. Beyond this point, however, the trail becomes steep and uneven and is no longer suitable for strollers.
This is the best place to turn around and follow the same path back. Even without completing the full loop, the walk is absolutely worth it!
When Is the Best Time to Visit Lake Tovel?
Lake Tovel is no longer a hidden gem and gets particularly busy during the summer months. That’s why I’d recommend visiting outside the peak season.
My personal favourite time to visit is autumn. When the forests surrounding the lake turn beautiful shades of yellow and orange, the scenery is simply breathtaking. Plus, there are far fewer visitors during the off-season, so you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere at your own pace.
Where to Eat and Picnic at Lake Tovel
Right by Lake Tovel, you’ll find Picnic Orso Bruno, a small refreshment spot serving snacks and light meals. Make sure to check the seasonal opening hours before your visit.
Alternatively, pack your own food and find a lovely spot along the lakeshore for a picnic. Enjoying your lunch with views of the turquoise water and surrounding mountains is just as wonderful! Please make sure to take all your rubbish with you and leave nothing behind. You’re in a nature park, so please respect the surroundings and help protect the environment.
Getting to Lake Tovel: Parking, Reservations and Access Restrictions
Important: Access to Lake Tovel is subject to different regulations depending on the time of year.
During peak season and on certain autumn weekends, parking is paid. Booking a parking space online is strongly recommended, as spaces are limited. Shuttle buses also operate between parking areas further down the valley and the lake during these periods. At certain times, access by private car may be restricted.
Outside the managed parking season, you can generally drive up to the lake and park without a reservation, provided the road is open and accessible.
Please note in winter: The access road to Lake Tovel is not cleared of snow and closes after the first snowfall. This means the lake is no longer accessible by car during this period.
Before setting off, make sure to check the latest information on road access, parking reservations and shuttle buses on the official Val di Non website.
