Route description
We do this hike at least once a year because it’s perfect for families. Once you’ve parked in the paid lot, follow the forest path to the beautiful Huber Pond. A few minutes in, you’ll reach a fork where you can choose to continue along the forest road or take the shorter, steeper route through the woods. If you’re with a stroller, stick to the forest road, but families with adventurous kids or those using baby carriers will easily manage the alternative path. About 45 minutes into the hike, the trail opens up, revealing a breathtaking 360° mountain panorama. Passing by grazing cows, you’ll soon reach the Tuff Alpine Hut, where you can hear (and smell ☺) the alpacas, horses, donkeys, and rabbits. Right next to the hut, there’s a small playground for the kids.
It’s best to start early, as the Tuff Alpine Hut doesn’t take lunch reservations unless you’re part of a large group. Still, the friendly staff always seem to find a spot for everyone. The food is definitely worth it, with traditional South Tyrolean dishes made with love and care.
For those who aren’t as keen on hiking, or if less fit grandparents are with you, you can book a carriage ride from Huber Pond to the hut for a fee. The carriage is electric, which makes it easier for the horses, but as an avid hiker and nature lover, I highly recommend walking to the hut if possible.
The opening hours vary slightly each year, so it’s a good idea to check the hut’s website.
For the more motivated hikers, the Tuff Alpine Hut also serves as a great stopover and is an excellent starting point for further hikes in the Schlern Nature Park.
