Route description

The three impressive waterfalls in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park are the perfect outing for families. The easy hike starts directly from the parking lot at the Waterfall Bar and takes you along child-friendly paths to several viewpoints, offering stunning views of the waterfalls.

Depending on how motivated your kids are, you can choose different hiking times:
Waterfall: 20 minutes walk | 10-15 meters high
Waterfall: 40 minutes walk | approx. 40 meters high
Waterfall: 55 minutes walk | approx. 40 meters high

The waterfalls can be reached either via the “Wasserfallweg” (Waterfall Trail) marked with No. 2 or the Franziskusweg (St. Francis Trail). Just follow the signs, the waterfalls are hard to miss. You can start from the village center of Sand in Taufers or park at one of the three designated parking areas. You can take a stroller as far as the first waterfall – after that, steps make the path unsuitable for strollers.

In winter, the paths can still be icy, and it can get quite chilly. The best time for this hike is from spring to autumn.

Flyline Waterfall Adventure
If you’re looking to make the return trip more exciting, you can soar through the trees on the adventurous Flyline! It operates from Easter to early October — prices and opening hours can be found on the official website.

A real highlight: even younger children can enjoy this experience with their parents, as the Flyline is suitable for anyone weighing at least 15 kg. Unlike fast-paced ziplines, the Flyline is designed for enjoyment rather than speed, reaching a maximum of 10 km/h — giving you a full five minutes to truly take in the forest as you glide through it.

We especially love the inclusive idea behind it: people of all ages are welcome — the oldest rider so far was 97 years old! The Flyline is also accessible for people with disabilities (a short path leads from the Toblhof to the Flyline).

Fun fact: this concept was invented by a local from South Tyrol and is now in use all over Europe!

Marble Runs
Near the Waterfall Bar at the very start of the trail, you’ll find a forest full of long, beautifully crafted marble runs — one even features water!
Our tip: Save them for the return trip as a “reward” — our kids were so excited about the marble runs they didn’t want to start hiking!

More Highlights
If you still have time after the hike, make sure to stop by Goasroscht, a small goat dairy just five minutes away. They make delicious goat’s milk products and sell local specialties in their farm shop.

Right across from it, you’ll find the Sheep’s Wool Museum, where you can learn about the traditional wool production and processing techniques of the Ahrntal valley — and even purchase handmade wool items.
