Route Description

The Schenner Waalweg (Scena Irrigation Channel Path) in South Tyrol is one of the most scenic and family-friendly hikes around Merano. It’s ideal for a walk with children: there are no steep climbs, the landscape is wonderfully varied, and the route can easily be adapted to suit your time, mood, and fitness level.

The path runs from the valley station of the Taser Seilbahn (Taser cable car) to the valley station of Merano 2000 (Falzeben) and takes around one and a half hours each way. You can, of course, turn back at any point – especially if the kids start to get tired.

Good to Know

The Waal (historic irrigation channel) flows from Schenna towards Merano, which means the outward route is slightly downhill and the return a bit more challenging.
If you’d rather tackle the uphill section first, start at the Meran 2000 valley station and hike upwards to Schenna instead.

You can also do this trail as a circular hike: the return route then follows the “Höfeweg” (Farm Trail) back to your starting point – though not along the water.

Option 1 – From Schenna to Merano & Back

Starting point: the parking area at the Taser Seilbahn (Taser cable car). From there, walk a short stretch downhill along the road until you see the signpost “Schenner Waalweg”.

The trail meanders picturesquely along the Waal, through forests, meadows, and vineyards, offering stunning panoramic views of Merano, Schenna, and the Burgraviato valley. Along the way, you’ll find small bridges, benches with scenic viewpoints, and several rustic taverns perfect for a family break. The Waalweg is very well signposted.

About 20 minutes before reaching the Merano 2000 (Falzeben) valley station, the water channel disappears – so it’s best to turn around earlier, especially when hiking with children.

  • Duration (round trip): approx. 2.5 hours
  • Elevation: 190 m descent (outward) / 190 m ascent (return)

Option 2 – Circular Route via the Höfeweg (Farm Trail)

For those who prefer more variety, the circular hike via the Höfeweg is a great choice. Start along the usual Schenner Waalweg path. Below St. Georgen, you’ll come across a signpost marked “Höfeweg” – turn left here onto a paved road and follow the signs toward “Salfgut”.

This section climbs steeply in several curves, which might be a bit demanding for children. The trail passes by traditional farmsteads and winds through chestnut woods, always following the “Höfeweg” signs. Along the way, you’ll spot fascinating life-size wooden sculptures, including two motorbikes you can actually sit on and steer!

Finally, the sign “Talstation Taser” (Trail No. 20) will guide you back to your starting point.

  • Duration (circular route): approx. 2 hours
  • Elevation: 220 m descent / 240 m ascent

Family Tips

  • Not suitable for strollers: At the beginning, the path leads down steps through a small gorg
  • Best seasons: Especially beautiful in spring (apple blossom) and in autumn, when the vineyards and chestnut trees turn golden.
  • Practical tip: Bring a change of clothes – kids playing by the Waal (water channel) can easily get wet!
