Route description

This easy hike in the Sarentino Valley is perfect for children who aren’t always thrilled about hiking – it’s short, varied, and filled with fun discovery stations along the way. The trail leads to a charming little spot featuring the historic Reinswald Mills, where you’ll also find a traditional Hofschank (alpine farmhouse tavern) and a playground. There’s even a small stream for splashing around – so don’t forget a change of clothes for the kids! 😉

How to get there: Park your car at the lower end of the parking lot near the valley station of the Reinswald cable car – the trail starts at the far end, furthest from the gondola. Right at the beginning, you’ll come across the first stop of the “Butterfly Trail” (Schmetterlingweg), called “Egg Laying.” The narrow asphalt road soon turns into a well-maintained forest path – both are stroller-friendly. On your right, you’ll enjoy beautiful panoramic views over the valley.

After about 10 minutes, you’ll pass the Hinterprosl alpine dairy, where you can buy homemade cheese and other farm products. Not long after that, you’ll reach the picturesque mills.

Hofschank opening times: Mid-May to early October, daily from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM. Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesday (as of 2025).

At the Hofschank, you can enjoy homemade ice cream, cakes, and traditional South Tyrolean snacks (Brettl-Jause). Please note: no card payments – cash only!
For kids, there’s a large playground with a sandpit, slide, swings, and a trampoline. A few steps uphill, you’ll also find a great treehouse and more water for playing.
This outing is also perfect for a half-day trip – Reinswald is easily accessible from Bolzano, and the hike itself is quite short.

Tip for older or more adventurous kids: Take the cable car up to the mountain station and hike down along the Nature Discovery Trail (Pflanzen-Erlebnisweg) to the mills. Both routes are part of the Urlesteig family hiking network.
