Description

The former copper and coal mine in Prettau is a great option for hot summer days, providing a refreshing cool down as the underground tunnels maintain a constant temperature of around 8°C. Of course, it also offers a fantastic opportunity throughout the rest of the year for visitors of all ages to learn about the centuries-old history of mining in South Tyrol. However, one thing to remember is: don’t forget to bring warm clothing!

The guided tours, available in German, Italian, or English, are highly recommended to be booked in advance, as they tend to be fully booked during peak season.

First, visitors receive their gear – helmets and rain jackets (which look incredibly cute on the kids) – and then take a small train into the underground tunnels, which was a real highlight for us. After a few minutes, you disembark and continue the tour on foot, venturing deeper into the world of mining. The tour lasts about 1.5 hours (as of July 2024) and provides a fascinating insight into the life of miners and the history of raw material extraction. It’s important to note, especially when visiting with small children: there is a toilet inside the tunnel that can be used in case of emergency.
