Description
A museum that keeps kids talking about it for days? That’s exactly what DoloMythos in South Tyrol is all about. Here, history is not just displayed – it is experienced. So intensely, in fact, that many young visitors leave dreaming of becoming archaeologists or researchers.
At DoloMythos, children step straight into the world of the Dolomites. On an exciting treasure hunt, they explore the museum and dig for real treasures: sparkling gemstones, small fossils, shark teeth, and even real gold. The best part: each child is allowed to take up to five finds home – a hands-on adventure to keep.
Dinosaurs, Ice Age bears & fascinating finds
But there is even more to explore. Life-sized dinosaur reconstructions show which creatures once roamed the Dolomites, alongside authentic regional discoveries. A true highlight is the enormous skeleton of an Ice Age cave bear – a moment that amazes both children and adults.
Cave adventures & interactive discoveries
Even small cave explorers are in for a treat. They can crawl through a cave and discover sparkling crystals along the way. Throughout the museum, countless hidden details invite curiosity – including a recreated excavation site beneath a glass floor.
And when young adventurers need a break, a dedicated kids’ cinema offers a journey into the myths and legends of the Dolomites.
DoloMythos is a true hands-on museum for families in South Tyrol, designed to spark curiosity, discovery and wonder in children.
A museum not just for kids
Adults will find just as much inspiration here. The museum brings knowledge to life, guiding visitors through the fascinating geological history of the Dolomites – from mountain formation and mining to crystals, minerals, fossils, and prehistoric flora and fauna.
A particularly impressive section focuses on ancient plant life, reflecting the depth of knowledge and passion behind the exhibition. Many exhibits come directly from founder Michael Wachtler himself, while others were contributed by international researchers.
The Dolomites reveal themselves here in all their complexity – making it easy to understand why they are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of the world’s most extraordinary natural landscapes.
A green place to take a break
When little and big explorers need a rest, the Café & Bistro Botanic right next to the museum is the perfect stop. Located under a bright, modern roof structure filled with plants, it creates a calm and refreshing atmosphere. It is often referred to as the “House of Life” – a peaceful place to pause and recharge.
Winter highlight: the underground Christmas market
In winter, DoloMythos transforms into something truly special: an atmospheric underground Christmas market. Warm and sheltered, visitors can stroll through the museum spaces and enjoy the festive setting.
Entry is free, while seasonal treats such as mulled wine, gingerbread and other specialties are available on site. This unique combination of cosy atmosphere and extraordinary location makes it one of the most memorable winter experiences in South Tyrol.
The mind behind DoloMythos
Behind DoloMythos stands Michael Wachtler – a figure whose story is as fascinating as the museum itself. From an early age, he was drawn to nature, searching for crystals in the Ahrntal valley when he was just six years old. That childhood curiosity grew into a lifelong passion for discovery and research.
Today, Wachtler is one of the region’s leading researchers. His findings include remarkable gold discoveries and scientifically significant fossils – among them Megachirella wachtleri, an important early ancestor of lizards and snakes.
Over the decades, DoloMythos has grown into a reflection of this spirit: curiosity, exploration, and a deep love of science. And today, that passion is passed on to every visitor – especially to the youngest explorers.
