Route Description
The Marlengo Waalweg Path is considered one of the most beautiful walking routes in South Tyrol, especially in spring. In the first half of April, the apple trees lining the path are usually in full bloom. During this time, the walk leads through a landscape of white blossoms, accompanied by the soft sound of flowing water and wide views over the Merano basin. Depending on weather conditions, the apple blossom period may shift slightly from year to year.
This walk is particularly well suited for families with kids. The presence of water adds a playful element, as children naturally engage with their surroundings—watching leaves drift along the channel or simply enjoying the movement of water.
Starting Point and Route Description
The Marlengo Waalweg Path can be accessed from several points. A common starting point is the free parking area near the Waldschenke in Marlengo, where the Squirrel Trail also begins.
From here, follow the signs for the Marlengo Waalweg Path and make sure to walk in the direction of Lana (down the valley), following the natural flow of the water.
The first section already offers a variety of small highlights: narrow bridges, benches, playful stations, and a viewing platform equipped with a telescope. The path itself is mostly flat, well maintained, and easy to walk.
Along the Marlengo Waalweg Path
Continue walking with the water channel on your right-hand side, following the route gently downhill. Small water wheels, sluices, and resting spots create a varied and relaxed walking experience.
About two-thirds along the route, those paying attention will notice a small cave on the right-hand side, which you can carefully pass through—a simple but memorable feature, especially for children.
Along the way, several traditional farm taverns (“Buschenschänke”) offer opportunities to stop for a break. These are typically open from spring to autumn and serve regional food.
Stop at the Leitenschenke
After around one hour of walking time (excluding breaks), you reach the Leitenschenke in Tscherms, located directly along the path.
The setting is relaxed, with Mediterranean influences, open views over the Merano region, and a good selection of food. For children, there is a small playground and a drawing corner, making it a convenient place to pause.
From here, you can either continue further along the path or return the same way to your starting point.
