Route Description

The Seiser Alm is one of the most impressive hiking areas in South Tyrol, perfect for anyone wanting to experience the Dolomites up close. Families especially enjoy the wide alpine meadows, easy walking paths and panoramic views across South Tyrol’s mountain landscape.

All essential information on access and traffic regulations can be found further below.

One of the most beautiful family hikes leads to the Laurin Hut. This 50-minute, stroller-friendly trail offers continuous views of the Dolomites and is ideal for families with young children.

In winter, bringing a sled is worthwhile: sections of the return route can be sledded down—though it is not an official toboggan run.

Directions to the Laurin Hut

The hike begins at Car Park P2 in Compatsch (details on access regulations below). From there, simply follow the signs to the Laurin Hut (trail No. 7, then follow the path towards Panorama Hotel)

  • On the right, you will see the distinctive Sciliar (Schlern), one of South Tyrol’s most iconic landmarks
  • To the left, the impressive Sassolungo (Langkofel) and Sassopiatto (Plattkofel) soon come into view
  • After around 20 minutes, you pass the Panorama Hotel
  • After 50–60 minutes, you reach the Laurin Hut

During the summer and winter seasons, the hut is open for food and drinks and offers a spectacular terrace view of the Sciliar Massif. In the shoulder seasons, the Laurin Hut is closed – current opening times can be found online.

Return along the same path back to Compatsch.

Seiser Alm: Access, Regulations & Traffic Restrictions

Because the Seiser Alm is one of the most popular destinations in South Tyrol, specific traffic rules apply.

Tip: If possible, plan your visit during the shoulder seasons (mid-April to mid-May, or early November to early December). It’s quieter, and you can avoid the (rather expensive) cable car ride.

Access when the cable car is operating

  • The road into the Seiser Alm protected landscape is closed to private vehicles from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (bicycles excluded).
  • During these hours, access is only possible via the Seiser Alm Cable Car or public bus.
  • Before 9:00 am and after 5:00 pm, driving is allowed only as far as Compatsch.

Parking system

  • A regulated parking system is in place on the Seiser Alm:
  • In St. Valentin, you must choose between P1 (Spitzbühl) or P2 (Compatsch) and receive the corresponding ticket.
  • A night-time parking ban applies from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am.
  • On weekends or on very busy days, the road may close before 9:00 am once parking capacities are full.

Car Park P2 (Compatsch)

  • P2 has two entry and two exit barriers.
  • Entries are closed from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am.
  • Upon entering, you must take a parking ticket.
  • Leaving Compatsch is possible at any time.

Guests staying on the Seiser Alm

Visitors with accommodation on the Seiser Alm receive a special permit that allows them to drive up to their lodging.

More information on current traffic rules is available on the official Seiser Alm website.
