Description

The Hölderle Natural Sledge Run in Val Martello is a true highlight for families in South Tyrol. With an average gradient of only around 10%, it is particularly suitable for families and beginners. However, caution is advised, as some sections can be icy.

A major advantage for families: Parking is available at both the start and end points of the sledge run. This allows you to decide whether you want to walk up first or start directly with the descent.

Family tip: For families with children who prefer not to walk much, it’s practical to park at the start point. After sledging down, one parent can walk back to fetch the car and pick up the family at the end of the run.

Directions for the Hölderle Sledge Run

For the “classic route” – first the ascent, then the sledge descent – park your car at the Gand parking lot in Val Martello. From there, follow the path along the Plima stream, which flows to your right. After approximately 30 minutes of walking, you will reach the start of the sledge run.

Important note: Please walk single file along the edge of the run during the ascent to avoid collisions with descending sledgers.

Extra Tip for Families with Small Kids

Directly opposite Café Hölderle, at the start of the sledge run, there is a gentle hill on the other side of the stream. This area is ideal for sledging with bobs or small snow discs, independent of the main sledge run.
It’s also perfect for building snowmen – a real winter paradise for younger kids!

Refreshments Along the Run

Both the start and end points of the sledge run offer cozy places to eat and drink. The Café Hölderle at the start is particularly popular. At the end of the run, in the village of Gand, several restaurants invite you to warm up and enjoy local specialties.

Snow Conditions & Safety

Since the sledge run mostly runs in the shade and along the stream, there is a good chance that sledging in Val Martello is possible even in winters with less snow.
Important: Some sections can be icy, so it’s recommended to sled carefully, especially with children.
