Route Description

The Gilf Waterfall Circular Hike in St. Martin/S. Martino in the Passeiertal Valley is an easy hike with children. Before reaching the striking waterfall, kids can enjoy a wooden marble run in the forest. And right at the starting point, the large village playground of St. Martin awaits – the perfect way to round off the tour.

Marble run and waterfall

The hike starts at the free parking lot near the sports center in St. Martin. Right next to it is the spectacular village playground with a giant slide and many more attractions – best kept as a reward after the walk.

From the parking lot, head toward the tennis club and cross the Passer River via the covered wooden bridge. After just a few meters, trail 1A branches off to the right and leads across a meadow to Gasthaus Haselstaude. From there, follow the signs for “Wasserfallrunde” and trail no. 1C into the forest. This section is a bit steep and uneven, so the hike is not suitable for strollers.

Soon you’ll arrive at the marble run in the forest, where wooden marbles can be purchased for €2. Our kids loved it and chased the marble countless times – a true highlight for families.

Continue on the trail until you reach a small fork. A short detour to the right (around 5 minutes) leads directly to the Gilf Waterfall – definitely worth a stop! Return to the main path, follow the signs, and you’ll soon be back at Gasthaus Haselstaude. From there, take the same meadow path back to the parking lot.

This hike is easy but not stroller-friendly. It can be done year-round, though in winter the shady forest sections may be slippery and cool.

Stop at Gasthaus Haselstaude or Bar Sportzentrum

After the hike, you can stop for refreshments at Gasthaus Haselstaude (which also has a small playground) or at Bar Sportzentrum right next to the parking lot. Drinks and light snacks like toast are available. While parents enjoy a coffee, kids can watch the tennis players – a great way for everyone to relax.

Playground in St. Martin/S. Martino in Passeiertal Valley

Also highly recommended: the village playground of S. Martino, located directly at the trailhead. If you’re planning a day trip, bring along a picnic. There are plenty of tables and benches, or you can simply spread a blanket on the grass. Our kids played happily for hours while we enjoyed the sunshine.
