Route Description

The small village of Tiso in the Isarco Valley is a true paradise for families who love exploring nature together. All walks and trails around the village are easy, family-friendly, and can be wonderfully combined.

One of our favourites is the Tiso Geo-Trail, dedicated to minerals and rocks, with interactive activity stations – perfect for little explorers.

Along the Geo-Trail with the Humming Stone and Sounding Stones

The trail begins at the Mineral Museum in the centre of Tiso, where you can park your car. From there, follow the sign “Gratschenbergrunde” uphill toward the church; the route later merges with trail no. 11. It first follows a paved lane, then turns into a wide forest track – smooth and stroller-friendly.

Along the way you’ll spot small information boards on local plants, since part of the botanical learning trail overlaps with this section. After about 20 minutes you’ll reach the fascinating Humming Stone: place your head inside and hum on a certain frequency – you’ll feel the vibrations resonate through your whole body.
A few minutes later you arrive at a scenic rest area with a picnic table and benches, perfect for a snack with a panoramic mountain view. Right beside it is the Sounding Stones station, where kids can use a mallet to test the different tones of various rock types.

From here, you could also take a short detour to the discovery site of the Tiso Geodes, although we recommend visiting it as part of the guided adventure tour offered by the Mineral Museum. We chose to stroll back leisurely along the same route and enjoyed a few more village walks afterwards.

Walk to the Hill of the Holy Sepulchre and the Cliff Bunker

Just a few minutes’ walk from the village centre lies the Hill of the Holy Sepulchre, a historic site offering a glimpse into World War I. Around this strategic lookout near Tiso, several trenches were constructed.

A short 10-minute walk leads you through an old trench system, and – for those feeling adventurous – you can even explore the underground bunker. At the end of the tunnel, daylight reappears and a short climb takes you up to the small chapel on the hilltop. From here, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Odle Peaks (Geisler Group) and the surrounding mountain landscape.

To find the trail, simply follow the signs marked “Heilig Grab Hügel” and “Schützengraben” starting from the Mineral Museum.

More family-friendly walks in Tiso

Besides the Geo-Trail, a lovely walk to the Mesner Lacke – a small idyllic pond with a large climbing playground nearby – is well worth it, especially in autumn.
And of course, a visit to the Tiso Mineral Museum is a must, where children can discover the mysterious Tiso Geodes.
