Hike from Auna di Sotto to the Loosmannhof in Signato – Stunning Dolomite Views

This family hike on the Renon is well-suited for both children and adults. In autumn it is especially rewarding with a stop for traditional Törggelen at the Loosmannhof, but the circular trail is also worth exploring in spring and summer – always with spectacular views of the Dolomites.

Route Description

We usually do this hike on the Renon at least once every autumn with our children. It combines breathtaking views (the Dolomites and the Bolzano valley basin), a short themed trail, and traditional Törggelen cuisine at the rustic Loosmannhof. Of course, the hike is also enjoyable in other seasons – only in winter some steeper sections may be slippery.

Directions

The hike starts at the parking area next to the “Oberplatten” bus stop in Auna di Sotto. Cross the road and follow the signs towards Signato and the Wine Trail (“Weinwanderweg”). The first stretch takes you along a paved road, where the view soon opens up to the Dolomites on your left. After crossing a small covered wooden bridge, the road turns into a forest track. Follow this until it meets the (traffic-used) Oberleitach road. Walk uphill along the roadside for a few minutes until you reach the parking lot at the “Polden” bus stop.

Circular hike – Option 1 (without stroller)

From the bus stop, turn left into the deciduous forest and follow the Wine Experience Trail (“Rebenweg”). Along the way, several stations provide information about winegrowing and grape varieties. While this may be less exciting for children, the short intervals between stations make the trail feel varied.

The path first leads past vineyards and olive trees before continuing through a shaded forest. Time and again, you’ll find beautiful viewpoints overlooking the Bolzano valley. At the end of the trail you arrive at the Loosmannhof, a traditional farmhouse restaurant. For the return, don’t take the same route back – instead, turn left uphill into the forest until you reach the “Polden” bus stop again, and then retrace your steps back to the starting point.

Note: Only the first part of this hike up to the bus stop is stroller-friendly – the Wine Experience Trail itself is not suitable for strollers.

Option 2 (with stroller)

If you are hiking with a stroller, follow the same route up to the “Polden” bus stop. From there, don’t turn left into the forest but stay on the paved road along the apple orchards (NOT uphill towards Signaterhof!). This way you also reach the Loosmannhof, and for the return simply follow the same path back.
Keep in mind: This route is also partly steep and uneven, but with a sturdy stroller and some extra pushing effort, it is manageable.

Törggelen at the Loosmannhof in Signato on the Renon

The Loosmannhof is a traditional family-run farmhouse, well known for its authentic South Tyrolean Törggelen cuisine. On sunny days it’s particularly nice to sit outside – the terrace offers a wonderful view over the Bolzano valley basin. As the place is popular, it’s best to call ahead to reserve a table and check the current opening times. Törggelen enthusiasts can also drive directly to the Loosmannhof, though we definitely recommend the circular hike.
