Route description
The “Ackerwaal” in Matsch is one of the most beautiful and idyllic irrigation channel paths in South Tyrol. Babbling water, lush alpine meadows, and views of the “King” Ortler – this family hike is a dream in many ways.
Bus Out, Walk Back – Recommended for Children
With children, we recommend walking the irrigation channel path in one direction only and returning partly by bus (walking time one way approx. 2 hours). Park your car in Matsch at the bus stop “Wendeplatz.” During the hiking season, shuttle 281 runs hourly towards “Glieshöfe” (check the timetable in the Südtirol Mobil App). Get off after about 10 minutes at the “Abzweigung Thanei” stop – this is where the “Ackerwaal” begins.
We recommend this direction because:
- You avoid walking uphill.
- You follow the natural flow of the water (kids can chase leaves along the way).
- You enjoy a stunning view of the Ortler.
The bus can be used with the Südtirol Pass or Guest Card.
The Ackerwaal in the Matschertal Valley
The trail first leads through an idyllic forest before opening up to wide alpine meadows, with the sparkling irrigation channel always to your right. At the end of the hike, a breathtaking view of the snow-capped Ortler massif awaits.
For our children, irrigation channel paths are extra motivating because they can walk along the water and splash around (bring a change of clothes just in case!). The trail is easy to follow – simply follow the signs for “Ackerwaal,” then near the end, turn left at a small wooden hut onto a steep path (toward Café Pleres) to return to the starting point.
Note: The trail is not suitable for strollers as it is too narrow.
Additional Tips for the Hike
- Dress warmly: Even in summer, the upper Venosta Valley can get cool when the sun disappears behind clouds. Bring warm clothing. A change of clothes is also recommended – water is irresistibly fun for children!
- Food & Drink: There are no inns along the trail, so bring a picnic or at least a snack for the kids. In Matsch, you can stop at Café Pleres (2 minutes from the parking lot) for coffee, cake, and light meals.
- Playground in Matsch: A few minutes’ walk from the parking area is the Matsch village playground, highly recommended. Parents can relax on the benches with views of the Ortler while children enjoy swings, a sandbox, a trampoline, a carousel, and a climbing castle with slide.
